All Around

All-around athlete in junior and senior high school at Exeter. For the Eagles he was All-County in football (1976-77), first team All- County in basketball and MVP of the track team. He was voted Exeter High School’s Male Athlete of the Year (1977). Attended Kutztown University where he was a first team All-East defensive back in football and led the nation in interceptions and punt returns (1981). He was also the top sprinter at Kutztown and was a first team All-PSAC selection in track. Bernie played for Seattle, Washington and Detroit in the NFL (1981-83). He also played semi-pro football eight seasons for the Ches-Mont Bandits and 24 seasons for the Holmesburg Ramblers where he was player of the year. Bernie was inducted into the Exeter High School and Kutztown University Halls of Fame and the Berks Football Coaches Hall of Fame. He was selected to the first team All-Century Berks football team. He taught in the Schuylkill Valley School District for three years. At the time of induction Bernie was the head coach of the Reading Express Indoor Professional Football team and was named American Indoor Football League Coach and General Manager of the Year as the Express won the Eastern National title (2008).
