Graduate of Central Catholic High School (1977) where he played football, basketball and baseball. In football he led Berks County in scoring and was named the All-State team (1975 & 1976), was a catholic high school All-American (1976), scored five touchdowns and gained 286 yards vs. Schuylkill Valley (1976) and played on the Big 33 team (1977). Overall, he rushed for 2,500 yards and 38 touchdowns for the Cardinals. Mike graduated from Duke University in 1981 where he was a starter in the backfield on the football team for two years and played varsity baseball for three years. Mike was named to the Reading Eagle All-Millennium team (2000) and best player list of the past 50 years. He was inducted into the Berks County Football Coaches Hall of Fame.
