Pegram was selected as a Reading High School 1st Team All-State basketball player in 1957 and played for the Red Knights under Coach Bill Horine during a 16-0 CP League season in 1956-57. He was part of teams that won consecutive PIAA District 3 titles in 1956 and 1957. Pegram averaged 14 rebounds per game, leading the state in this statistic. In his senior year, he recorded 374 points and 364 rebounds. In 1957, he held Bob Heffner of Allentown, the league's top scorer, to 10 points. Pegram later moved to the Washington DC area, where he continued playing in the Industrial League.
