He is a Wyomissing resident. In high school at Massapequa, NY he was a state champion in cross country, 880 and the mile. As a junior in 1968 he won the high school mile at the Penn Relays in 4:15 before 45,00 spectators. As a senior he was the national high school indoor 1,000 yard champion at Madison Square Garden. Also in 1969, as a senior, he again won the Penn Relays HS mile in 4:12.6 (the first high school student to win two consecutive mile runs). Later in 1969 he won the Golden West Invitational 880 in 1:49.8 and was named the top USA high school runner by the Sacramento Bee. Brian enrolled at Kansas University and helped the Jayhawks of Coach Bill Easton to win the NCAA Indoor Championship. He anchored the winning 2 mile relay team. He transferred to Villanova and ran on four gold medal relay teams at the Penn Relays. Brian was ineligible as a sophomore (transfer rules) and ran for the N.Y.A.C. in 1971 and ran a 4:01.7 mile. As a post-graduate (4th year of eligibility) at Villanova in 1974 he anchored Villanova to the distance medley relay title.
