He coached the Wyomissing High School track and field team for 32 years and turned the program into a county powerhouse with his coaching philosophy of the importance of team over the individual. His teams won several Berks County titles as well as a PIAA District 3 championship. He was selected as Berks Coach of the Year six times and ended his career with a record of 266-44-1. Upon his retirement, the 1600 relay at the Wyomissing Shaner Meet was named in his honor.
