Stanley was a 1934 Mount Penn High graduate where he had an outstanding career as a high school baseball player. He followed that with a 19-year career in professional baseball as a player, coach and manager. In 1944 Stanley won the Eastern League batting title. In 1945 he was named Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year for Indianapolis (Class AAA) and played in the major leagues for the Boston Braves in 1945. After retiring from playing, Stanley managed the Burlington, N.C., Class B team to the 1954 pennant. He retired from baseball, after a nearly 25-year career, in 1959.
