A true triple-treat athlete in football, basketball and baseball at Reading High School and Bucknell University. Al was selected to Pop Warner’s All-American football squad (1921), received honorable mention on the Walter Camp All-American teams (1920 & 1921), was named to the All-Pennsylvania and All-East teams and got the most votes at defensive end on the All-Time Bucknell University football team. After his graduation (1923), Al played pro football with the Pottsville Maroons and played pro baseball with Reading in the International League and York in the New York-Penn League. He began a football coaching career at Schuylkill College (later Albright College) (1925), compiling an overall record of 35-17-2 over six seasons. He coached at Ashland High School (1933-35, compiled an overall record of 29-4 and won the state championship (1935). Al moved on to Muhlenberg College to coach football and basketball (1936) then went to Holy Cross College to coach basketball (1945) and won the NCAA championship by defeating the University of Oklahoma (58-47) with a team led by Bob Cousy and George Kaftan (1946-47). He had an overall record of 65-10 after three seasons at Holy Cross. Al became the head coach of the Boston Celtics for two seasons before beginning a 17-year stint as head basketball coach at Dartmouth College. Al is a member of the Reading High School Hall of Fame, the Bucknell University Hall of Fame, the Helms Hall of Fame and the National Basketball Hall of Fame. Julian was laid to rest in Wyomissing Cemetery (Gouglersville).
