Catherine Rhodes

Catherine was one of the pioneers in women’s sports. She was a teacher and coach in the Reading School District for 42 years. Her teams won 27 volleyball championships and 25 city championships in track and field. She is credited for her success with the young women she taught and coached at Southwest Junior High School. Upon her induction into the Berks County Sports Hall of Fame, she said, “It’s great, but I must give all the credit to the girls I had at Southwest. It’s to them I owe this.”

Catherine was one of the organizers of the Reading Board of Officials for Women and was the chair- person for many years. She was listed in the United States Gymnastics Federation’s Who’s Who in Gymnastics. Catherine was a sister to long-time U.S. Congressman, George Rhodes.
