Attended high school in Leesport, PA and earned 13 varsity letters in baseball, football and basketball during his collegiate career at Kutztown University. He went on to coach basketball at Frackville High School, compiling an overall record of 116-1. Charley saw his Frackville team win 80 consecutive games, lose an over- time game, then finish with a 36-game winning streak. “Dunk” moved on to Reading High School as the basketball coach (1945) and three years later, replaced Manny Jacobs as the baseball coach. During his 11 seasons as the Red Knight’s basketball coach, his teams won a Central Penn Championship, reached the Eastern finals in state play and had an overall record of 144-82. Dunkelberger’s tenure as baseball coach at Reading spanned 23 years, with his teams winning East Penn League titles in 16 of those years and going undefeated for one season at 15-0 (1951).
