Coaching

A native of Lebanon, “Scoop” was a three-sport athlete at Ontelaunee High School in Leesport and continued his athletic careers in baseball, basketball, and track and field at Schuylkill College and its successor, Albright. After graduation, he took on teaching and coaching careers at Ontelaunee High (1927), remaining there for 15 years and instituted that school’s physical education department. Clemens then moved to Muhlenberg High School (1942) and compiled a coaching record which made him one of the nation's overall leaders. With WWII in progress, Scoop coached all sports at Muhlenberg, which included football (varsity and junior varsity), soccer, basketball, baseball, and track and field. His first baseball team won the county baseball championship (1943). Next season saw Muhlenberg win championships in soccer, basketball, baseball and track and field (1943-44). Over a 30-year span, Clemens compiled an overall record of 1,033 wins, 371 losses and a .734 winning percentage. He was most successful at baseball, with an overall record of 565-140 and a .800 winning percentage. He also excelled in basketball (270-110, .710), track and field (30-15, .667), football (93-51-4, .646) and soccer (75-55, .577). His coaching talents extended to Legion baseball, girls softball, where he guided the Diamond Lils, and Berks Rec League tennis. Lloyd was named the athletic director by Muhlenberg (1954) and served until 1967.
