In today’s world, Dietrich would be considered a phenomenon – a four-sport athlete. He lettered four times in football, basketball, baseball and track and field while at Reading High School. He attended Bucknell University, playing basketball (guard) for three seasons and serving as captain, varsity football (scatback) for four years and baseball (center field) for four seasons. He earned a bachelor of the arts degree from Bucknell and went on to do graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. Dietrich returned to Reading High School and assumed the coaching duties (1934). His six-year tenure as football coach produced a 24-29-4 record with his best seasons achieving records of 6-3-1 (1926, his debut year) and 6-2-1 (1929). As a baseball coach, Johnny’s clubs picked up four East Penn League titles during a 13-year span (1927-39). Three other teams finished second and his overall record was 108-56 with the last six teams that he coached losing only 15 games.
