Stewart “Spike” Moyer

Soccer

A graduate of Reading High School, where he competed in football and swimming (1931). He went on to Springfield College, MA, where he earned All-American honors in soccer and All-New England honors in gymnastics. He also played lacrosse and tennis while earning a bachelor’s degree in Science at Springfield and a master’s degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania. After four years of active duty in the service, “Spike” returned to Reading to become the assistant superintendent of the recreational bureau. He went on to head the bureau for 16 years (1949-65). Moyer also served as athletic director of the Olivet Boys Club for three years and was later hired as the executive director, a position he held until his retirement. Moyer was also a retired Navy captain with 30 years of service time. He received the Boys’ Club of America Keystone Award for 38 years of service to boys’ clubs (1977), the YMCA Distinguished Service Award for his service to youth (1978), the Distinguished Service Award from the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (1983) and is an inductee of the Reading Bowling Association Hall of Fame (1983).
