If you’ve been an athlete over the recent decades at Reading High School, chances are you’ve had your athletic injuries tended to by Hoby, the longtime trainer at the Castle on the Hill. Born in Waynesboro, PA, Hoby was a three-sport athlete at Reading High competing in football, basketball and track for three years, despite being only 5'9" and 128 pounds. In football, he was a two-way end, kicked off and was the extra-point kicker. His forté was the then unknown end-around play, on which he averaged 28 yards per carry. On the cinder track, Hoby ran in the hurdles and 100, 220, 440 yard events. He also vied in the high jump and the long jump. In basketball, Geesaman was a forward on teams coached by Hall of Fame member Johnny Dietrich, which compiled a 36-18 record during the three years Hoby played. As a YMCA member, Hoby was active in the YMCA Circus in High Wire, Trapeze and Tumbling. In boxing at the YMCA, he was never beaten in the 125 lb. weight class. After his scholastic days, Hoby competed for the undefeated and unscored upon VVV’s in football and also played basketball in the City League. He was rated as one of the top professionals among high school athletic trainers, having attended numerous schools designed to keep individuals in the field up to the latest standards of treatment.
