One of the few scholastic baseball players went from high school to the major leagues. Randy graduated from Birdsboro High School, where he was coached by Gene Shirk, and became a pitcher for the Philadelphia Athletics (1936). He spent 32 months in the service with the Coast Guard during WWII and would go on to pitch for the A’s, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox and Washington Senators after his discharge from the service. The 6'3", 185-pound right-hander had a break-out season for the New York Yankees, compiling an 11-3 record with a 2.31 earned run average (1946). After moving to the White Sox, he opened the season with a 6-0 record and finished at 13-16 with a 3.81 ERA (1949). That year, Randy was selected as Berks County’s Outstanding Athlete by the Berks County Officials Association (1949). Randy finished his major league career, which fell just shy of ten years, with a 51-59 record and a 4.17 ERA. He concluded his playing days with the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League, posting a 4-4 record (1952). After his retirement from playing baseball, the Monocacy resident spent most of his years in the baseball scouting profession. He worked for many years as a scout for the Yankees and later worked for the Major League Central Scouting Bureau.
