Born in Harrisburg, PA, John played basketball for Harrisburg Tech, winning the national championship (1920). He went on to play football, baseball and basketball at Albright College. Smith coached football, baseball and basketball at Reading High School, winning the Central Pennsylvania Championship (1939-41). He was also a football coach at Albright College. John served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was killed in action at Okinawa at the age of 44.
