Rocky Colavito

Rocco Domenico “Rocky” Colavito was born in New York City on August 10, 1933. One of his stops in the minor leagues was with the Reading Indians (1953), where he led the Eastern League in home runs (28) and RBI (121). Colavito made it into the major leagues to stay (1956) and began a 14-year major league care Cleveland Indians. He set the American League record for most consecutive errorless games (234) and led all major league outfielders in games played for five years. Rocky tied the American League record for most total bases in a game (16) when he hit four home runs, tying a major league record, at Baltimore on June 10, 1959. Colavito led the league in total bases (301), slugging percentage (.620) and was tied for the lead in home runs (42) (1959). He was voted the Indian “Man of the Year” twice (1958 & 1965) by the Cleveland baseball writers and the “Most Memorable Personality” by Indians fans (1975). His trade to the Detroit Tigers for batting champion Harvey Kuenn rocked the baseball world (1960). Other stops during his career included Kansas City, Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers before his retirement from the major leagues (1968).
