Graduate of Richmond Hill High School, where he lettered four years in basketball and three years in tennis. Renken served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He graduated from Springfield College, MA (1947), having participated in cross country, basketball and tennis. He earned an M.A. degree from Montclair State College, NJ (1953) and a doctorate in physical education from Springfield College, MA (1955). He served as assistant director of athletics at Wilbraham Academy, MA and was director of athletics and physical education, as well as the basketball and baseball coach, at Bloomfield College, NJ (1947). He joined Albright College as a basketball and golf coach (1955) and succeeded Eugene Shirk as athletic director (1967). In 25 seasons as Albright’s basketball coach, Renken’s teams compiled a 414-345 record, won the Middle Atlantic Conference College Division Tournament three times, the MAC-North title six times and advanced to the Division III quarterfinals (1980). He became just the third active Division III coach to crack the 400-victory mark (1979). Renken received the NABC Award of Merit for his 25 years of coaching and the 18th consecutive Sam Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award for the Lehigh Valley-Scranton District. He was named NCAA District II College Division Coach of the Year (1972). Renken served as president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and served on the board of directors of the Amateur Basketball Association of the United States of America, the Eastern College Athletic Conference and the Basketball Hall of Fame. He was also the Eastern Region Chairman of the Olympic Selection Committee. Renken has served on and chaired virtually every committee within the NCAA and NABC, as well as actively participating on NIT, ECAC and various other basketball organization committees.
