Dr. Karl Friedman

A graduate and four-sport athlete in football, basketball, baseball and track at Reading High School (1921). “Buck” still holds the one-game Reading High scoring record in basketball with 48 points, playing center in a game vs Tamaqua. Friedman was a running back in football, a first baseman in baseball and his specialties in track were the shot put, discus and javelin. Karl attended Dartmouth College, where he played three years for the varsity basketball team and was the team captain during his senior year. He earned bachelor, masters and doctoral degrees. Karl played one season of pro basketball for New York of the old Metropolitan League and two seasons in the Penn-Del League. He served two years as the head basketball coach at Wilmington Friends School and served seven years as an assistant at Peddie School. In addition to teaching at Rutgers Preparatory School, Friends School and Peddie School, Highstown, New Jersey, Friedman was associated with Girard College in Philadelphia for 33 years. He advanced from a teacher, to vice-president, to serving as president (1957-68), when he retired. Karl served as a trustee of Pierce Junior College, on the education committee at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science and as a board member of the Old Lyme library.
