Photo

Max was an outstanding baseball and basketball player who was a high-class shortstop and second baseman in his youth. He played 17 years in the semi-pro baseball leagues with West Reading, Topton, Robesonia, Kauffman Furniture and Model AC. Max also played basketball with the Boyertown Big Five, Tremont, the Olivets, the Reading Transit and Light team and many others. He was known to be able to get the most out of a young player when he coached midget baseball in the 1930s and 1950s. During the 1940s, Missbach managed the Reading Clothing team and Bowers Battery in the city's Industrial League. During a dozen seasons as coach of the 11th & Pike “Pikers”, Missbach won seven championships. Max was known as the “King of the Northeast Section” because of his ability to develop young baseball talent. Max received awards from the Central Catholic Boosters for work in amateur sports and from the Reading/Berks Hot Stovers in appreciation for many years of service to the youth of Reading.
