John Shaner

A graduate of North Coventry High School in Chester County (1902), where John competed in basketball, baseball and track and field. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education at Albright College and a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. A former baseball and basketball coach, John served as athletic director at the old West Reading High School. During his 40-year career at West Reading High, Shaner also served as the phys-ed director at the high school and was the borough’s recreation director for 30 years. His work in athletics has been honored by the Annual Shaner Interscholastic Track-and-Field Meet staged by the Wyomissing Area School District each May.
