A graduate of Reading High School, where he participated in swimming and football for three of his high school years (1935). He attended West Chester State and was a member of the Rams’ football and swimming teams for four seasons and also earned a letter in tennis. As a coach at West Chester, Ed never had a losing season in varsity swimming, tennis and freshman football. West Chester’s swim teams captured numerous state college titles under his direction and never lost a dual meet to a state college during his coaching career. The Reading native received his bachelor’s degree from West Chester State, his master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and doctorate in education from Temple University. He began a 25-year association with West Chester (1951) and ultimately became director of its career development center (1961). He also served as professor of health and physical education and dean of admissions. He has served on civic committees in West Chester, Stone Harbor, NJ and Fort Lauderdale, FL. Ed was awarded a U.S. Senate Hayes-Fulbright grant to assist the nation of Colombia in developing a national program of health, physical education and sports (1962). His doctoral dissertation was a research project on the physiological preparation of athletes immediately preceding a competitive event. Known as “Doggy”, Ed retired from the education field and later lived in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He was a charter member of the Berks County Swimming Hall of Fame.
