Basketball

An outstanding basketball, baseball and football player. He was the high scorer in basketball in the Catholic Youth Organization League with 437 points (1947) before attending Central Catholic High School. He was named to the Pennsylvania All-State first team at Central (1950 & 1951) and scored 72 points in the Eastern States Tournament while at Eastern Military Academy (1950). He was the MVP for the Cardinals’ basketball team as a junior, scoring 47 points in a single game and 612 points for the season, and was named to the Catholic High School All-American third team (1951). As a senior, DePaul was MVP for the Cardinals again, scoring 614 points and totaling 1,364 points for his career at Central. He was named the Outstanding Senior Athlete (1952). Mike was a member of All-Star football and basketball teams while at Long Island Prep (1952) before beginning his collegiate career at Albright College, where he made the Pennsylvania Collegiate All-State second team as a freshman and honorable mention as a sophomore. He finished with 1,430 career points at Albright, including a single-season high of 432 points and a single-game high of 37 points. DePaul is most remembered for beating a strong St. Joseph’s college team with a 30-foot set shot, just as the buzzer sounded, at an Albright home game (1954).
