Warren Auchenbach
1983
Track & Field

One of the best all-around athletes in Berks County history. He played soccer, baseball, basketball and track at Muhlenberg High School. A Temple resident, he was named the Outstanding Berks County Athlete (1938). He became Muhlenberg’s first state champion by winning the Class B long jump in track and finished second in the javelin and third in the 100-yard dash. Warren ran a 9.7 100-yard dash when Barney Ewell of Lancaster ran a 9.6 in the same race (1937). He was the Amateur Athlete Union sprint champion (1942). Auchenbach once defeated the legendary Jesse Owens at 100 yards in an exhibition race. He also played baseball in the minor leagues for the St. Louis Cardinals before WWII ended his career. Auchenbach, vice president of the Berks County track officials, has been the official starter for the track meets. He is also one of the “founders” of the Reading-Berks Basketball Old-Timers Association and continues to attend meetings consistently.
