A graduate of Birdsboro High School, Tony won a total of five State P.I.A.A. championships in cross country and track. He won two in cross country, two in the 880 run and one in the mile run. He was named the Outstanding Athlete in Berks County (1943). While a student at Notre Dame University, he finished sixth in the National Championship and ran the sixth fastest time for the 660-yard run in Notre Dame history. During service in the U.S. Army, he toured Europe and was a member of the Army track team that won the G.I. Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Tony went on to become the head track coach at Exeter and Wilson high schools, producing four state champions, including Scott Hagy in the javelin and Greg Fredericks in distance running. He is also credited with reviving the Berks County scholastic cross country league. In addition to track, he coached wrestling at Wilson and had an overall record of 48 wins, 8 losses and 1 tie and led the Bulldogs to a Berks County wrestling championship (1966).
