A four-sport athlete at Central Catholic High School, Joe participated in football, basketball, baseball and track and followed in the tradition of Warren Auchenbach and Tony DaDamio when he was named the Outstanding Athlete in Berks County (1944). Fromuth played Legion baseball for Gregg Post and won a state title (1944). He was named the outstanding player in the state Legion All-Star game and was honored as the All-American boy by the Legion. He received an athletic scholarship from the College of the Holy Cross and later signed a professional baseball contract with the Boston Red Sox. After serving in the U.S. Army, he became an outstanding player in the Pony League, batting .387 and driving in 103 runs as a first baseman (1948).
