Bobby “Burke” Ruttenberg
1984
Boxing

One of the best boxers ever developed in Reading, the flyweight had 132 fights in Reading, New York and New England. He began his career by knocking out his first opponent, Midget Newton of Pottstown, in 43 seconds (1920). Ruttenberg fought under the name of Bobby Burke during the 1920s. He got his ring name as an amateur, after a reporter asked his name. Ruttenberg replied, “Bobby Berg,” but through a misunderstanding, the article identified him as “Burke.” Bobby later taught boxing at the Tyson-Schoener recreation center. He died in 1964.
