John Markel, Jr.

A member of the Reading High School golf team for four years and the captain (1938-41). He was the only golfer to win three state P.I.A.A. Championships in a row (1939-41). His long and very successful golf career began by winning the Berks County Junior Championship and the Berks Amateur Championship (1938). Next year, he won the Berks Medal Championship, the Berkshire Country Club and Williamsport Country Club titles and the Philco Invitation Championship (1939). He won a host of other titles, Berks County Amateur Champion, Berks County Junior Champion, Berks County Medal Champion, Berkshire Invitation Champion, Philadelphia Junior Champion, Central Pennsylvania Champion, Scranton Country Club Invitation Champion, Berkshire Country Club Champion (1940) and was a three-time District III P.I.A.A. champion (1939-41). John and his partner, Bill Lewis, won the Berkshire Country Club Best Ball Invitational (1944) and he won the Berks County Best Ball Championship with his partner Dr. S. Roger (1946). Over the next several years, John won 12 titles (1947-52) and repeated as Berks County champion (1953 & 1954). He was the P.G.A. Assistant champion of the Philadelphia Section (1964) and won the Pro Assistant Championship of the Philadelphia Section (1972). Rounding out his fine golf career, he was the Bermuda Goodwill Senior champion (1973), the Senior Pro/Junior Pro champion of the Philadelphia Section (1982), repeated as Bermuda Goodwill champion (1982) and won the Philadelphia P.G.A. Senior Championship (1983).
