When the name Roger Penske is mentioned, one quite naturally thinks of big-time auto racing. Roger himself was a successful race car driver and was named Sports Illustrated Driver of the Year (1964). Penske Racing has become the most successful IndyCar race team in history. Penske Racing has won 64 IndyCar races, including a record seven Indianapolis 500’s, eight National Championships and a total of 89 pole positions (since 1990). Penske designed cars are powered by Chevrolet Indy V8 engines, designed by Ilmore Engineering, a joint venture company between Penske and General Motors. Penske returned to stock car racing with Rusty Wallace driving in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series (1991). Penske is the founder and president of Penske Corporation, an innovative transportation services company. At the time of induction, subsidiaries of Penske Corporation include Detroit Diesel Corporation, Diesel Technology Corporation, Penske Truck Leasing, professional motorsports facilities in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Penske Racing. Penske Corporation has annualized revenue of over $2 billion with operations carried out by more than 9,800 employees at 400 facilities worldwide. Roger is an inductee of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (1984).
