A graduate of Watsontown High School (now Warrior Run) and Penn State University, Ray was a member of two national championship soccer teams and was an All-American his senior year. He also played baseball at Penn State as a catcher and played six seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization. He began his teaching and coaching career at Green Park Union High School (now West Perry), before joining the staff at Fleetwood High School (1964) and developing a Berks County dynasty as their soccer coach for 22 seasons. For the Tigers, Buss had an overall record of 375-66-37, including a 259-23-6 record during the last decade of his coaching career. He coached two state championship teams (1978 & 1980), seven District III title teams (1976, 1978-83) and 11 Berks County title teams (1970-71, 1976-84). Since advanced honors were initiated (1972), he has coached 72 All-Berks players, 16 All-State selections, nine All-Mid-Atlantic players and seven All-Americans. Ray has been named Berks County Coach of the Year eight times (1970-71, 1976-79 & 1981-82), Pennsylvania Coach of the Year twice (1978 & 1980), Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year twice (1978 & 1980) and National Coach of the Year (1980). Buss was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (2000).
