A three-sport standout at Reading High School, Ferdie was named All-Central Penn Conference and All-State honorable mention at quarterback as a senior (1953). He received an athletic scholarship to Syracuse University, where he played baseball and football, was a teammate of Jim Brown, received two awards for academic/athletic achievement and helped the Orangemen reach the Cotton Bowl (1957). Kuczala was an assistant coach at Reading High School for seven years and the head coach at Northeast Catholic in Philadelphia for three years before starting the football program at Conrad Weiser High School (1967). In his 14 varsity seasons at Conrad Weiser, Kuczala had a 65-55-1 record, two undefeated seasons and three Inter-County League championship teams. He was named the Inter-County Coach of the Year three times and the Berks County Coach of the Year twice. He retired after the 1982 season and received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Reading High School Alumni Association (1986).
