Ray began his coaching career at West Reading and had a 26-7-2 mark over four seasons (1951-54). He had two stints as the head coach at Governor Mifflin High School (1956-73 & 1985-86) with a record of 121-69-5 and an overall Berks coaching record of 147-76-7. At the beginning of his 25th season as a head football coach (1987), Linn became the senior coach in Berks County history, breaking the tie with Don Thomas, who was the head coach at Exeter High School for 24 seasons and retired in 1982. While at Mifflin, he had nine championship teams, including seven Tri-County Conference titles (1959, 1961-63, 1966, 1968, and 1971). Linn was also athletic director at Governor Mifflin.
