A three-sport standout at Reading High School, Fred was the leading scorer for the Red Knights’ Central Penn League and District III basketball title team that reached the Eastern state finals (1954–55). He then attended Staunton Military Academy before heading to Syracuse University, where he was an All-American in football at end during his junior season, helping the Orangemen to a 23–14 victory over Texas in the Cotton Bowl and a national title (1959). He was named to the All-Academic football team as a senior and received the Alexander Award for excellence in citizenship and athletics. Fred was named the Berks County Athlete of the Year (1959). In 1961 draft he was the NFL 59th overall pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers and the AFL 54th overall pick and played for a short time with the New York Titans of the AFL. He was inducted into the Reading High Athletic HOF in 2015. As of the date of induction, he was president of Fred Mautino Developers, Inc., in Syracuse, NY.
