Hearing impaired since childhood, Barry was one of the top athletes in the history of the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (PASD). In basketball, he became the first 1,000 point scorer for the PASD (1960), finishing with 1,623 points. He played quarterback in football and was a pitcher/third baseman in baseball. Barry was named to the All-American first team for the deaf in football and basketball. He helped the United States win the gold medal in basketball at the International Games for the deaf in Finland (1961). He played for several basketball teams in Berks County, including Croll & Keck and won four scoring titles in the City League during the 1960s. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf Hall of Fame in Mt. Airy and the Maryland Sports Hall of Fame.
