Played quarterback for the Reading High School football team and was named to the All-Central Penn League first team and received honorable mention on the All-State team (1951). He also played basketball for the Red Knights and scored 204 points over two seasons as a starting guard. He went on to Syracuse University, where he earned three varsity letters in football. As a senior, playing in the same backfield with All-American running back Jim Brown, he directed the Orangemen to a 5-3 record, passing for 324 yards and seven touchdowns, and was named the team’s most valuable player (1955).
