A graduate from Hamburg High School, where he played basketball, track and soccer. Leroy led the Hawks to the Berks County soccer title and was named outstanding senior athlete at Hamburg (1945). He went on to Kutztown University, where he played baseball, soccer and football and was named outstanding senior athlete. Leroy began an extensive coaching career at the scholastic level, coaching basketball, football, soccer, baseball and golf for 16 years at Chicago Military Academy, Huntington Township, Schuylkill Haven, Port Jarvis, Hamburg and Muhlenberg. He then coached college basketball and golf for eight years at Elizabethtown and Lehigh universities. In 22 seasons as a basketball coach, he had an overall record of 360-164 and won four championships. His overall coaching record in all sports was 497-223, with nine titles. He is a member of the Berks Basketball Old-Timers Hall of Fame. He was the athletic director at Wilson High School for eight years and Hamburg High School.
