Doug Clemens
1988
Baseball

A stand-out in baseball and football at Muhlenberg High School. Doug was a member of the All-Berks football team as a running back and led the Leesport Legion baseball team to a second-place finish in the state (1956). He received a football scholarship from Syracuse University, but a knee injury ended his football career, so he concentrated on baseball. Doug was a stand-out first baseman for the Orangemen over three seasons and signed a professional contract (1960), before his senior year, with the St. Louis Cardinals to play in the outfield. He went on to play parts of nine major league seasons with the Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, and Philadelphia Phillies (1960–68). He had his best season with the Phillies, hitting .256 in 79 games (1966). He finished with a .229 career batting average. Doug was named the outstanding athlete in Berks County in 1961.
