A stand-out athlete at Reading High School. Bob was captain of the Reading High tennis team (1941), the district III doubles champion, the city boys and junior champion, and runner-up in the boy's state championship. He was ranked Number 1 in Middle States boy's tennis and Number 16 nationally. In baseball, he was a varsity player for the Red Knights and played third base for Gregg Post’s Legion state title team (1940). He also had a tryout with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1941) and played for several semi-pro baseball teams. Bob was also a varsity basketball player at Reading and played for various area teams after graduation. In soccer, he was the captain of the Reading High team (1940) and played for the championship Lucky Star teams. Harbach is best known for his officiating work in basketball and softball. Upon completion of his 34th basketball officiating season, he had worked more than 3,500 games at the high school, college, and semi-pro levels. His softball officiating included high school, Rising Sun Sunners, and the women’s pro league.
