A stand-out runner and graduate of Oley Valley High School (1931), where he participated in soccer, basketball, and track. Al went on to West Chester State University, where he lost only one cross-country meet in four years and set school records in the mile and two-mile runs. He won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Penn Relays and the Middle Atlantic AAU (1934). Al returned to Oley Valley as a teacher, coach, and athletic director (1936–76). He coached soccer, basketball, baseball, cross-country, and track and was Oley’s first athletic director. He was the District III and PIAA chairman in cross-country.
