She had finished seventh in the U.S. Olympic Trials (1980) and sixth (1984) before making the 1988 U.S. Olympic team. Skillman has been a national and international competitor for more than a decade. A member of the U.S. national team since 1985, she was the Pennsylvania indoor FITA champion (1983–87) and the state FITA target champion (1984–85, 1987–88). She also won the National Sports Festival (1985), was runner‑up in the national target championships (1987 & 1988) and the aggregated Mid‑Atlantic indoor and outdoor champion (1988). She was the U.S. Woman Archer of the Year (1985) and has competed with the U.S. team in Finland, China and Venezuela, among other countries. Skillman was a member of the American squad that won the team bronze medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in archery.
