Ranked nationally in several Masters swimming events 40 years after he began his swimming career as a member of the Reading YMCA, where he helped win four state titles (1949–52). Doug won the Ron Regar Memorial River Swim six consecutive times (1954–59). A graduate of Governor Mifflin High School, where he was co-captain of the swim team with his twin brother Dave, he swept Berks titles in the 50, 100, and 200-yard freestyle events (1955). He also won the Berks County Swimming Association senior championships in the 100, 200, and 400 yard freestyle events (1958–60). He went on to swim at the University of Oklahoma and was named to the All-Big Eight team (1961). He received Reading–Berks Chamber of Commerce swimming awards (1956 & 1961), served as chairman of the Ron Regar Memorial River Swim (1971–81), and was inducted into the Berks County Swimming Hall of Fame (1972).
