Softball

A graduate of Freeland High School, along with Penn State and Columbia Pacific universities, Carl played five minor league seasons for the Detroit Tigers and was selected to the New York–Penn League All-Star team (1969). He switched to softball and became a member of the Rising Sun Sunners AA Major Fast Pitch team (1972–82). He played in nine ASA national tournaments, helping the Sunners win three national titles (1975, 1977–78). He helped the Sunners win the World Softball title in New Zealand (1976) and two gold medals at the National Sports Festival (1978 & 1980). Carl was named to the Amateur Softball Association All-American first team as a catcher for the Sunners four times (1974–75, 1977–78) and was named to the second team in 1979. He was an assistant coach at Alvernia University for ten years. Carl was inducted into the District XII and Pennsylvania Softball Halls of Fame.
