All Around

Before becoming a politician and eventually mayor of Reading (1959–63), John was a stand-out all-around athlete. He earned nine varsity letters at Reading High School, serving as captain of the football, basketball, and track teams as a senior (1929–30). He earned All-State recognition as a three-year starter in basketball, won the District III long jump, and was undefeated in swimming for two years. At Bucknell University, he was captain and earned All-American honorable mention in football, was undefeated in MAC competition for two years in the long jump and low hurdles, and boxed in four weight classes, winning the Eastern Intercollegiate title at 167 pounds as a senior (1934). While in the Navy (1940–46), he played football and served as a boxing instructor with former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey. John also played professional football for the Harrisburg Capitols and Berwick Bulldogs.
