An all-around athlete at Hamburg High School, won the Berks Legion batting title with a .457 average (1951) before embarking on a 27-year career in baseball and softball. Bob played five seasons in the Dodgers organization, where he won the batting title in the New York Pony League with a .398 average (1954) and hit .328 for Class A Pueblo (1957). He joined the Rising Sun Sunners softball team (1962) and played first base, third base, and the outfield until his retirement (1978). He helped the Sunners win eight state, three national titles, and one world title during his career. He was also a key member of the gold-medal teams at the National Sports Festival (1976 & 1978). He was named to the All-American team four consecutive years (1975–78) and hit over .400 twice (1976 & 1978).
