A graduate of Reading High School (1932), he played football, basketball and baseball for the Red Knights. He was captain of Reading’s Central-Penn title basketball team (1932) and played Legion baseball for Gregg Post. Walter went on to play basketball and baseball at Syracuse University, where he was on the founding board of the Ernie Davis Club and a key member of the alumni association. He played baseball in the New York Canadian League. After serving as an Army Major during WWII, he resumed his varied and highly successful business career. He was manager of Althouse Chemical (presently known as Crompton & Knowles Corporation), vice-president of a Venezuelan oil drilling company, vice-president of a sea water conversion company in Florida and president of both Manpower, Inc. and Security Guards of America. He retired to Palm Beach, FL, where he founded the Beach and Tennis club and was director of the Chamber of Commerce.
