Sherry Werner

All Around

A graduate of Reading High School in 1937, Sherry was a standout all-around athlete for the Red Knights, playing football, basketball and baseball. He was captain of the basketball team during his senior year and was named Reading High School’s Outstanding Athlete (1937). He attended a prep school in Washington, DC, where he was named to the area’s All-Star football team. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy (1942), where he played football and baseball. At Navy, he received All-East and All-American honorable mention as a fullback in football, led the baseball team in homeruns and RBIs for three straight seasons and received the Outstanding Athlete Award. Werner was also named Berks County Athlete of the Year (1941). While serving in the Navy, he achieved the rank of commander and coached football for six years, directing the 150-pound Academy teams to national intercollegiate titles (1955 & 1956). Werner later became the head football coach at Reading High School (1962-67).
