John Yocum
1991
Golf

An all-around athlete at Reading High School, where he competed in basketball, golf, cross country and track. He was captain of the cross country team that won the state title (1940) and was on the District III championship mile relay team. He went on to Albright College, where he played three years of varsity basketball and golf. John had a long amateur career in basketball and was a basketball official for 15 years. It is his long and successful golf career, however, that Yocum is best known. After becoming a golf professional (1955), John won five Berks public-course titles and more than a dozen better-ball of partners tournaments throughout the state. At one time, he held the course record at five different courses. He was the head pro at Galen Hall (1956-65), Reading Country Club (1966-71), Flying Hills (1972-81) and Venzke’s (1982- 88). He was also the golf coach at Alvernia University, winning an NAIA District 19 title. John also conducted many tournaments, clinics and workshops throughout the area.
