A graduate of Reading High School (1951), where he started his long and varied golf career playing for the Red Knights. He was the first golfer to win both the Pennsylvania Amateur (1952) and the Pennsylvania Open (1960). He was the first amateur to win the Open and has also won the Pennsylvania Senior Amateur (1988 & 1990). He played in the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, won by Jack Nicklaus over Arnold Palmer in a playoff, finishing as the third low amateur (1962). He played in the U.S. Amateur five times, reaching the round of 16 once. In the Golf Association of Philadelphia, he has won the Philadelphia Amateur (1960), the Patterson Cup (1963), the Philadelphia Senior Amateur (1990 and 1992), the Silver Cross (GAP medal play championship) twice and assorted better ball tournaments. John also won three consecutive Berks Amateur titles (1956-58) and has won about 25 Berks club championships over five decades. He was the first general manager and one of the original investors of the Moselem Springs Golf Club. He designed, built and managed the Heidelberg Country Club. At time of induction John lived in LaQuinta, CA. Since induction, John has continued to win various honors including Warner Cup (Gross) 1998, PA Golf Association Senior Amateur Champ (1998, 1990, 1991, and 1992), and PA Golf Association Senior Amateur Runner Up in 1998.
