All Around

A graduate of Reading High School (1945), he was an all-around athlete playing baseball, basketball, and soccer. He was a stand-out in basketball and baseball at Reading High School and Albright College. He was captain of the Red Knights basketball team during his senior year and was the MVP of the baseball team that won the East Penn championship. Bernie also played baseball for the Legion Gregg Post Keys, was the top batter with a .407 average, and led the Keys to the state championship (1944). He was selected to play in the American Legion All-Star game at Shibe Park, Philadelphia, PA. At Albright College, Bernie played baseball and basketball for three years. In basketball, the team won the MAC Championship (1951). As captain of the baseball team, he led the team in hitting with averages of .411 (1950) and .322 (1951). He started his coaching career at Phoenixville High School, where he coached baseball and basketball. He also coached baseball, basketball, track, and soccer at Reading High School. He was a PIAA basketball official for 15 years. Bernie organized the Southern Middle School Sports Hall of Fame. He retired after 39 years as a teacher and principal in the Reading school district.
