Graduated from Central Catholic High School (1946), where he was a standout athlete in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was the captain of the basketball team that won 25 straight games, the captain and MVP of the baseball team, and the winner of a bronze medal in the mile-relay at the Penn Relays. In Legion baseball, Joe was the co-captain of the Gregg Post team that won the state title (1947) and he was named the top player in the state that season with a 12–0 pitching record and a .356 batting average. He was selected to play in the Legion All-Star game in Philadelphia as the starting pitcher and struck out 15 of 16 batters. His athletic prowess earned him a full scholarship for football and baseball at Holy Cross College, where he was named the outstanding pitcher in New England. Joe played professional baseball for the Boston Red Sox organization at Roanoke in the Piedmont League and Scranton in the Eastern League, compiling a 28–13 record in the minor leagues that included two no-hitters. One of his most remarkable baseball experiences was defeating Curt Simmons in two of three pitching duels.
