Harry Schaeffer
1992
Baseball

A graduate of Shillington High School (1942) and a four-year letterman in baseball, was an outstanding pitcher for the Shillington “Speedboys,” as well as at East Stroudsburg College, where he continued his baseball career. After graduating from college, he signed with the New York Yankees and was a member of their organization for nine years. In Harry’s best season, he was 19–9 with a 2.76 ERA for Beaumont in the Texas League (1951). That performance earned him a promotion to the major leagues (1952), and he became a starting pitcher for the Yankees under manager Casey Stengel, but was used sparingly. Upon retiring from baseball, Schaeffer became the baseball coach at Cocalico High School and directed the team to nine league and five county titles during 14 seasons. He also served as athletic director for the Cocalico School District for 25 years. Harry was inducted into the East Stroudsburg Hall of Fame (1966).
